new year renewal- renew your environment

new year renewal- renew your environment
01-08-15

After my husband read the life-changing magic of tidying up, he encouraged me to read it as well.  I pored through most of it as he whizzed around the house, following the technique of tidying up.  While the book was all extremely interesting and useful, the passage that really resonated with me reminded me of my habit-forming workshops: " When you've finished putting your house in order, your life will change dramatically. Once you have experienced what it's like to have a truly ordered house, you'll feel your whole world brighten." Marie Kondo points out that putting your house in order helps you put your life in order and inspires you to form better and long-lasting habits.

Changing your environment is one of the most powerful and accessible ways to change your behavior.  If your home is a mess, then your mind will probably be a mess as well. And messy minds do not create a foundation for change!  Feel renewed by getting rid of clutter (and Kondo's method is an effective and fairly unsentimental way to clear out a LOT of stuff). Waking up each day to a room and house that feels clear will bring us all a stronger sense of clarity. And that is a renewal for our spirit from which we could all benefit!

If you don't have the time or desire to read Kondo's very concise book, here are some of her concepts/my interpretations:

1) Clean one room at a time, thoroughly. Start with your clothes and dump them all out of the closets and drawers. It is astounding to see the accumulation of "stuff".

2) After getting one room tidy, keep it tidy so that you don't have to keep cleaning up all the time. The feeling of tidiness is a renewal and freshness that will never get old!

3) Appreciate the feeling of space that your tidying up gives you and how much easier it becomes to make decisions/choices in your life. You probably will be less likely to want to clutter your body with unhealthy food, or your environment with unpleasant people and experiences.

May we all feel tidy in our houses, minds, and spirits!
